About this role

ID Recruitment is partnering with a growing mechanical engineering manufacturing company to recruit an experienced Project Design Engineer to join its engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled engineer to take ownership of varied projects, transforming client ductwork layouts and specifications into accurate 3D models and fabrication-ready drawings. Working closely with clients, consultants, contractors and internal teams, you will manage design deliverables from the pre-order stage through to production handover.

This role offers the opportunity to work with advanced BIM coordination, CAD automation and future CAD-to-CAM technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical contact for clients and contractors across assigned projects.
  • Create and maintain detailed SolidWorks and Revit models and technical drawings for ductwork, plenums and associated components.
  • Manage project design deliverables, ensuring compliance with quality, cost and programme requirements.
  • Prepare material take-offs and parts lists, coordinating with production and R&D teams to ensure designs are suitable for manufacture.
  • Integrate company designs into federated Navisworks BIM models to identify and resolve clashes before fabrication.
  • Collaborate with clients, consultants, contractors and internal stakeholders to address design and coordination issues.
  • Produce custom component and installation drawings, including flashings, transitions, coving, Unistrut placement and logistics layouts.
  • Implement and maintain CAD automation tools, including DriveWorks, to improve efficiency and streamline repetitive design tasks.
  • Develop project area codes aligned with production schedules, covering both standard and non-standard ductwork.
  • Support the transition from existing Excel-based processes to future CAD-to-CAM workflows.
  • Manage project documentation and maintain accurate, up-to-date deliverables within Procore.
  • Liaise with consultant engineers, quantity surveyors and the commercial team to review project scope and refine designs.
  • Coordinate with procurement, operations and fabrication teams to resolve technical queries.
  • Support project handover to fabrication, ensuring production teams have the drawings, information and instructions required.
  • Attend design review meetings and incorporate agreed revisions.
  • Respond promptly to RFIs and other technical queries.
  • Ensure all design outputs meet project specifications, company quality standards and relevant industry requirements.

Essential Requirements

  • An honours degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least three years’ experience in mechanical design or building services engineering.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks.
  • Strong working knowledge of Revit and BIM coordination.
  • Experience using CAD automation tools such as DriveWorks.
  • Familiarity with ventilation and ductwork standards, including SMACNA and DW144.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to manage multiple project priorities.
  • An interest in adopting new technologies and ways of working, including AI-supported tools that can improve design efficiency, accuracy and innovation.
  • Fluent business English and legal permission to work within the EU

Quality, Environmental, Health and Safety

  • Apply company’s QEHS policies and procedures throughout their work.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, forms and records in line with the company’s QEHS Management System.
  • Contribute to company’s wider business objectives and positive company culture.
  • Provide weekly updates on agreed departmental KPIs.
  • Represent and protect the company’s interests in all professional activities.
